Esterbrook’s Fantasia is a Special Edition pen that belongs in the spotlight. Fantasia is a word that makes me think of magic (I might be channeling a specific Disney film here). And I can’t picture magic without sparkle. And sparkle is what this pen does. I spent so much time twirling it around in the rays of sunlight streaming into my apartment. Even more time than trying to photograph it.
I’ve held a large number of sparkly pens in my time, but I have to say that Esterbrook somehow manages to have the most eye-catching sparklers, particularly when viewed in the raw sunlight. I’m still kicking myself for not purchasing a rare green Esterbrook at the Atlas Sidewalk Sale in 2021.
This pen falls in the sub $200 price point. One reason is because this is the JR Pocket Edition. That means that this is probably a good option if you are looking for a pen for travel or just to have handy to tuck into a pocket or purse. It’s size and weight make it a great on-the-go fountain pen.
While the trim is gold colored, the sparkle elements in the body are more silver-like. The blue/gold contrast is a really solid color combination.
As you can imagine, the fact that this pen is a pocket-sized pen means the weight isn’t “Jennifer heft level”. So, for those of you who enjoy a pen that has some weight to it, you might find this one a little too feathery in your hand. This aspect is certainly user preference specific, but I have found that I yearn for a pen that is not for the faint of heart or that travels easily. I require complications and challenges in my fountain pen relationships. I tested the M nib option, though the standard Esterbrook options are available, and found it to write reliably like all other Esterbrook’s I’ve doodled with.
